| Mastering is the difference that turns a project or studio
recording into a finished master, ready for glass master creation and
duplication from a duplicating house. The processes are performed to the
two track mix and involve applying EQ and final compression (at minimum).
It is an art beyond session recording and such correctives are often crucial
toward the end result, that being a finished recording. One can pay a
great deal to mastering labs to benefit from such service. I have begun
to do mastering for a few clients who approached me because they heard
the presence and quality of my own work. I am able to offer you these
services at a significantly lowered rate from that of mastering labs.
The format I work from is CDR. I have not invested in a DAT machine because
I would then have to charge a great deal more for the same end result
which is possible from a CDR source. Guidelines for preparing your pre-master
for mastering are: 1. Avoid overcompressing your final mix. Most outboard compressors are of individual track quality but are not suited for mastering a full mix. 2. Avoid trying to make the mix loud at the expense of incurring distortion and clipping. The mastering process, in and of itself, will result in a loud CD. 3. Avoid doing your own corrective EQ for the total mix. This is best left to the mastering engineer. 4. Bear in mind that every digital process applied prior to mastering, results in increasing the length of the digital word. Avoid use of reverb washes and the like. All of that can be done within the mastering environment. Part of mastering involves applying dither which terminates the digital word back to true 16 bits. In essence, it is best that you do as little as possible other than simply mixing down the multitrack recording and getting it on CDR. 5. Leave the mixes unedited, meaning, do not trim off beginning and end. This will be done in the mastering process and then gives me a noise snapshot to work with. Often, I can substantially reduce or eliminate noise in your recording such as hiss or amp buzz without altering your music in any audible way. Rates for these services are $75 per hour. In the case of a collection of songs, an estimate of time will be given after examination of the material and fee will be proposed for the entirety of the project, which will reflect substantial savings over the base hourly fee. Your satisfaction is very desired, as it directly has bearing on increasing my business, so I will endeavor to make certain you are completely satisfied. Re-mastering is included in your fee, if you, upon receipt of work, desire further changes. It is best, however that clients not be present during mastering, as much of it involves headphone work, rather than monitors. Please do, however, provide copious notes for each song as to what you want "pulled up" ie:vocals..lead..etc and any specialized effects you want on a particular passage. It is very common to add inaudible washes of 24 bit reverb at this point to produce a spaciousness in the recording. Some of my clients want a very dry sound, so please do specify all concerns along with submission of your material for mastering.
